Acting on a citizen petition with 252 signatures, the City Council on Dec. 15 changed the name of the Columbus Day holiday to Indigenous Peoples Day.
The action, approved by a 4-1 vote, makes Belfast the first city in Maine to officially bump the Italian navigator long credited with discovering America and instead celebrate the people who were here and presumably doing fine before he arrived.
