Installation of a 115-kilowatt solar array began earlier this month at the former City Landfill on Pitcher Road. The array will generate — at least once the sun is shining — about 20 percent of the city's electricity demand in combination with a smaller system installed on Belfast Fire Station.
Councilors on Dec. 15 learned the new solar electric array will be operational by the end of the year.
