In order to synchronize clocks around the world with the somewhat irregular rotation of the Earth, a single second is added from time to time. This is called a "leap second," and the next one is scheduled to be added at about 7:59 p.m. Tuesday, June 30.
Scientists started adding these seconds in 1972.
